About NaamSetu

What this is

NaamSetu started as a place to look up Indian baby names with their meanings and cultural background, and grew to cover the astrology families use around naming — rashi and nakshatra, the panchang, matchmaking, and numerology. Everything on the site is free to use. There is nothing to buy and no account is required, though you can create one if you want to keep account settings in one place. Cross-device shortlist syncing is still being built.

The name catalog

Names are collected and published in batches rather than scraped wholesale. Each entry carries a meaning, origin, gender, and where we have it, the local-script spelling, pronunciation and rashi or nakshatra association.

Entries are drafted with the help of language models and checked against reference sources. Roughly one name in three has additionally been checked against a source by a person on our team — those pages say so, and list the source. The rest do not, and we would rather tell you which is which than imply an editor has read all ten thousand of them.

We are candid that this is ongoing work. Meanings for Indian names genuinely differ between regions and languages, and a single gloss can never capture all of it. Every name page carries a correction link, and those corrections are read. If a meaning looks wrong to you, it may well be — please tell us.

What the astrology tools calculate

Planetary positions come from NaamSetu's own JPL DE440s astronomy engine, using the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the sidereal standard used by most Indian astrologers. The chart, dasha, panchang and matchmaking tools compute from the birth or calendar data you enter — they are not lookup tables and not generated text.

That engine has been checked against a professionally produced Gujarati janma patrika — a paid report cast by a practising astrologer for a real birth. Nine of the ten bodies agree with it to within one arcsecond, the ascendant and the lunar nodes to within nine. Every categorical result matched exactly: sign, nakshatra, pada, tithi, paksha, yoga and karana. The balance of the dasha at birth matched to the day.

We mention it because it is the kind of claim you can hold us to. Where a calculation is still being checked against an independent reference, the page says so on the result itself rather than in a footnote — we would rather show you a provisional label than imply a precision we have not yet demonstrated.

• No paid reports, subscriptions or consultations. If you see a price anywhere on this site, it is a bug — please report it.
• No predictions dressed up as certainties. The daily horoscope is written content; the tarot draw is a shuffled deck for reflection. Neither is a forecast.
• No claim that a name determines a life. Naming traditions are worth understanding and worth honouring; they are not a guarantee, and we do not sell them as one.
