What is Choghadiya?
Choghadiya is a Vedic time-selection system used to find auspicious moments for starting new activities. The word comes from the Sanskrit words 'Cho' (four) and 'Ghadiya' (time intervals). Traditionally, one Ghati is approximately 24 minutes, making a Choghadiya roughly 96 minutes (1.6 hours).
The system divides the day into two main cycles:
- Diurnal (Day): From Sunrise to Sunset.
- Nocturnal (Night): From Sunset to the next Sunrise.
Each cycle is divided into 8 equal parts, and each part is assigned one of seven types of Choghadiya (one type repeats to make 8 parts).
Using Choghadiya for Naming
While Nakshatra and Rashi are primary for choosing the first letter of a baby's name, Choghadiya is often used to determine the most auspicious Muhurat (time) for the naming ceremony itself.
Choosing an Amrit or Shubh Choghadiya for the ceremony is believed to bring positive vibrations and long-lasting prosperity to the child's life journey.
Calculation Logic
Unlike fixed hour systems, Choghadiya is dynamic. It depends entirely on the precise local sunrise and sunset times. This is why a Choghadiya in Ahmedabad will differ by several minutes from one in Mumbai or Delhi. Our tool automatically calculates these windows based on your selected city or manual solar inputs.
Auspicious Rankings
Quick Tip
When in doubt, Amrit is universally considered the best for any positive beginning. Avoid Rog specifically for health-related matters or travel.
